Why are IDs Required?

Instructional Design is technology, strategies, transfer, analysis, experience, selection, methods

Great question!

I wondered too.

Instructional designers (IDs) are required because they create better learning experiences. Want to know more?

Let’s start with the basics.

Instructional design (ID) is…

an essential element of an effective learning effort. Instructional design requires the analysis and selection of the most appropriate strategies, methodologies, and technologies to maximize the learning experience and knowledge transfer.

In other words, instructional design is exactly what it sounds like. It is the design of the learning experience!

ID is used in…

  • Higher Education
  • Business
  • Government
  • K-12 Education

to increase learner and worker success. Quality instructional design creates experiences that are engaging, effective and efficient. Supplemental information and ongoing support is also made readily available to students or employees.

ID is done by…

many people involved with education.

Teachers, professors and trainers all utilize instructional design from time to time. However, they are experts in their own domains. It is difficult for them to also maintain expert knowledge on current learning theory and the latest learning technology. To create the best learning experiences, they need to partner with experts in instructional design.

This video does a good job of illustrating the difference between a teacher and an instructional designer.

Those that specialize entirely in creating learning materials, activities and experiences are Instructional Designers (IDs)!
